Today we’re talking about natural and non-chemical worming protocols that many people use. We will look at some of the reasons people choose a natural worming method for their dog and explain one of the methods you can apply.
Carrying out a worm count test for your dog a few times a year is a good idea regardless of your worming protocol. Regular vet wormers, over-the-counter wormers, natural wormers, no worming unless you get a positive test result, these are all legitimate options.
No two dogs are the same and neither are locations, circumstances or health conditions.
Why choose a natural worming method for dogs?
People have different reasons for wanting to control worms and other issues naturally. Let's look at a few.
Environmental reasons to Naturally deworm a dog
Liquid “Spot-On” flea/dewormers are not great for the environment. We used to use them for our boy Marty, but our vet told us they were moving away from them because the chemical treatment was showing up in the water system across the UK.
Drug Resistance and Efficacy in Dogs
Many people just don’t want to give unnecessary drugs or chemicals to their dogs. In the same way that humans taking antibiotics regularly could reduce the efficacy of the drugs, some Vets and researchers are now alluding to the problem of drug resistance when it comes to regular deworming.
Holistic pet care
Many people simply look at pet care in the same way they approach their own health, with a holistic approach.
So if you don’t want to regularly deworm your dogs with drugs, you don’t want to wait until there is an issue to resolve, and you do want to take preventative measures against worms in dogs…
What are your options?
Well all we can do is tell you of different methods that we know many people are using and managing issues with. If you’re worried about your dog at all, our advice is to always speak with your vet.
Natural Worming Protocol #1:
Regular Worm Counts PLUS Natural Intestinal Care.
Firstly, furry rabbit ears are not a natural wormer. Trust us, it's nonsense. If you want to know why, read this post here.
The first thing to understand is that knowledge is power. So a regular worm count test will tell you exactly what your situation is and whether you need to change your treatment methods. But what does “regular” mean?
We recommend at least 4 times a year. If your dog likes to lick grass, find and chow down on dead animals or birds, or they are partial to sniffing, eating or rolling about in other animals' poo, you might want to test more frequently.
The more exposure to sources or parasites, the more likely you will encounter issues.
As for preventative treatment, we recommend Verm-X Original. It's a natural formula that has been on the market for around 20+ years. It’s 100% natural and safe.
It comes in the form of Crunchies, which are tasty biscuits the size of a large kibble. You simply feed your wee pal a few of the crunchies every day. The number differs on the size of the dog. Our boy Marty has 4 per day and he is 14kg. He gets them in the evening as a treat, you can just add it to your dogs meals.
Verm-X also has a liquid form. It's a stronger, concentrated version of the same thing. A small amount added to meals for three days each month and that's it done.
